I Have a Dream Speech, Martin Luther King Essays I Have a Dream Speech, Martin Luther King Essay I Have a Dream Speech, Martin Luther King Essay The historical narrative document â€Å"I have a Dream† is a political speech which was delivered by Martin Luther King on the 28th of August 1963 in the shadow of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington. The speech was aimed at the 250,000 Civil Rights supporters, both black and white, who had gathered for the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, a key moment of the American Civil Rights Movement. One imagines that Martin Luther King hoped that his words would not only be heard that day in Washington, but that they would be carried across the rest of America too. Martin Luther King was born on the 15th of January, 1929. When he finished his studies in Sociology he went on to read Divinity Studies at Crozer Theological Seminary. He became a Baptist pastor in 1954 and from then on started to campaign for civil rights issues. In 1955 he was elected President of the Montgomery Improvement Association which staged a year long boycott by African Americans of Montgomery buses over segregation and inferior treatment of blacks. When the boycott ended on the 21st of December 1956, Martin Luther King and the M. I. A. had achieved desegregation of Montgomery buses; the leader had gained great prominence and became primarily a civil rights activist. He was a man with great promise and was viewed as an inspiration and leader by African Americans. In January 1957 the leaders of the Montgomery Bus Boycott founded the Southern Christian Leadersip Conference (SCLC), made up of churches and clergy from across the South. Martin Luther King was elected President as he had played a fundamental role in the Conference’s creation. As the bus boycott had achieved such success the SCLC’s objective was to organise non-violent protests to gain equality for blacks. The SCLC’s Birmingham campaign preceded the March on Washington, and King’s inspirational â€Å"I have a Dream† speech. Between 1957 and 1962 17 black churches and private homes were bombed in Birmingham. In 1963 the SCLC took on Birmingham as a major campaign, setting up headquarters and organising peaceful protests, demonstrations and sit-ins. On Good Friday, the 12th of April, Martin Luther King personally led an officially banned demonstration march; all the protestors were immediately arrested. When King’s wife had no news from her husband, she contacted the White House and President Kennedy became personally involved. King was kept in jail for 8 days, although he received preferential treatment due to the President. His involvement in Birmingham gave the campaign even more prominence, taking it nationwide and it led to Kennedy bringing in the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Police actions and their treatment of the protestors sparked national outrage. The Birmingham campaign led to other protests across the country, culminating in the March on Washington. The rally was the group effort of several different civil rights organisations, all with different approaches and outlooks. The organisers were A. Phillip Randolph, Martin Luther King, James Farmer of CORE, Roy Wilkins of the NAACP, John Lewis of SNCC and Dorothy Height of the National Council of Negro Women. They were known as the â€Å"Big Six†. The objective of the March was to have important civil rights legislation passed on the following issues: racial desegregation in public schools; protection for demonstrators against police brutality; a public-works programme to provide employment; the prohibition of racial discrimination in public and private hiring; a minimum wage (2$ an hour); and the self-government of the District of Colombia, an area with a black majority. The Kennedy administration originally opposed the demonstration fearing riots would take place which would jeopardise the newly introduced Civil Rights legislation. When they realised the demonstration would go ahead anyway the White House became actively involved in the organisation, re-drafting speeches and inviting white organisations to attend in the hope that this would prevent any violence. The organisers estimated around 100,000 protestors would attend the March but on the day approximately 250,000 people turned out, around a quarter of whom were white. The major police presence was unnecessary in the end as it turned out to be a peaceful, non-violent protest. Even speakers included all of the â€Å"Big Six† civil rights leaders and Catholic, Protestant and Jewish religious leaders. The only female speaker was Josephine Baker. The most important and acclaimed speakers were John Lewis and Martin Luther King. â€Å"I have a dream† has gone down in history as one of the most important speeches in American oratory. King’s speech was dramatic, well-delivered and impassioned; millions of Americans watched the developments on television which helped the ideas and hopes of the Civil Rights Movement reach the whole country. The speech, an excellent example of rhetoric, was not delivered for the first time at the March on Washington. Other drafts or versions were given at various meetings and rallies, although the â€Å"I have a Dream† version was unique, delivered exclusively at the March. King actually deviated from his written speech towards the end, possibly prompted by the cries of Mahalia Jackson (a well known Gospel singer) of â€Å"Tell them about the dream, Martin†, thus prompting King in his anaphora of â€Å"I have a dream†, used 8 times in his discourse. Other examples of anaphora in the speech include â€Å"Now is the time† and â€Å"One hundred years later†. The language used is powerful, evocative and passionate; the message is strengthened with metaphors and imagery. Some example are â€Å"dark and desolate valley of segregation to the sunlit path of racial justice†, â€Å"whirlwinds of revolt†, â€Å"whose governor’s lips are presently dripping with the words of interposition and nullification†, â€Å"jangling discords†. Martin Luther King’s background as a Baptist preacher was an important influence on his speech; indeed one feels like a member of his congregation listening to him giving an impassioned speech from the pulpit. There are many religious and Biblical references throughout the discourse; the first comes in the opening paragraph with â€Å"It came as a joyous daybreak to end the long night of captivity†, an allusion to Psalm 30:5. Further on King alludes to Amos 5:24 when he says â€Å"until justice rolls down like waters and righteousness like a mighty stream†, and to Isaiah 40:40-5 with â€Å"every valley shall be exalted, every hill and mountain shall be made low, the rough places will be made plain (†¦)†. There are also numerous allusions to â€Å"God†, â€Å"Lord†, â€Å"faith† and â€Å"God’s children†. I have a Dream† begins â€Å"Five score years ago†, an allusion to Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg address. Martin Luther King spoke from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, a location which was surely well-calculated given his opening line. The beginning of the speech is an impassioned criticism of racial inequal ity. King refers to the Emancipation Proclamation, an executive order issued by President Lincoln on the 1st of January 1863 during the American Civil War. It declared the emancipation of just over 3 million of the country’s 4 million African-American slaves who had belonged to white Americans. 0,000 of them were freed immediately, and nearly all were emancipated by July 1865. The first decade after the war, known as Reconstruction, was a positive period for the newly-freed slaves. Various Civil Rights Acts were passed, blacks gained independence and some economic stability. However, things changed in the 1870’s when Reconstruction ended and times became difficult for blacks. Unfavourable laws were passed, including voting qualifications, and in 1896 the Supreme Court declared legal â€Å"separate but equal† services and facilities for African-Americans which meant segregation, putting them at a great disadvantage. King also refers to two other historical American documents: the United States Constitution, with its abolition of slavery and prohibition of voting qualifications based on colour, race or previous status as a slave; and the Declaration of Independence which proclaimed â€Å"all men are created equal†. He argues that all 3 of the afore-mentioned documents failed completely where African Americans were concerned. However, he declares that he is hopeful that the situation will be remedied, calling for racial justice and equality for â€Å"all of God’s children†. Martin Luther King was a great believer in peaceful demonstrations. He did not approve of violence and encouraged his followers to fight for racial equality with peaceful methods: â€Å"In the process of gaining our rightful place we must not be guilty of wrongful deeds†. He urges them to ‘turn the other cheek’, even if they are wronged, and to show exemplary and dignified behaviour â€Å"on the high plane of dignity and discipline†. He also reminded them not to mistrust all white people, as many of them supported racial equality, which could be seen at the March itself as around a quarter of the emonstrators were white. King mentions the police brutality and racial violence suffered by many African-Americans and alludes to the fact that some of the demonstrators had just been released from jail, having been locked up for their participation in civil rights acts. As previously mentioned, King himself was arrested and jailed on several occasions for his part icipation in sit-ins and protests. The last part of the speech introduces the famous â€Å"I have a dream† anaphora, and is where King began to improvise. For many this is the most emotive part of the whole speech. It is an impassioned plea for freedom; for his children and all black people to be judged on their character and not on their colour or race; and for blacks and whites to become brothers. He refers to â€Å"My Country t’is of Thee†, a patriotic song also knows as â€Å"America†. It served as a de-facto national anthem until â€Å"The Star-Spangled Banner† became the official U. S. national anthem. His hope is that the words â€Å"let freedom ring† will one day be true for everyone. He uses these words as a plea, a cry in the last lines â€Å"Let freedom ring from the prodigious hilltops of New Hampshire (†¦)†, then cites other U. S. cities, from New York to Georgia. His final wish is that people of all colours, creeds and races will finally be able to say they are â€Å"Free at last! free at last! thank God Almighty, we are free at last! †. With the success of the March on Washington and Martin Luther King’s speech came the height of his fame. He was named Times magazine’s Man of the Year in January 1964; he met the Pope and he was invited to speak abroad. President Johnson invited King to the White House when he signed into law the Civil Rights Act of 1964, an Act greatly influenced by King’s role in Birmingham. The year ended on a high note when he received the Nobel Peace Prize on the 10th of December, 1964. King donated the 54,000$ prize money to the Civil Rights Movement. Shortly after collecting his prize, King and the SCLC focused on Selma, Alabama. Half of its 30,000 citizens were black yet only 350 were registered voters. The SCLC decided to launch a major vote-related campaign with months of hard campaigning, pre-banned marches and spouts of violence. The Ku Klux Klan murdered white Minister James Reeb in Selma, bringing the town to the attention of the rest of the U. S. Thousands of religious leaders demonstrated outside the White House, and soon after President Lyndon Johnson disclosed his Voting Rights Bill in a televised address. The SCLC’s Selma campaign led to the Voting Rights Act of 1965, giving the government more power to control racial abuse at a local level of voting, and it prohibited tactics to prevent black voter registration. It was another huge success for Martin Luther King. After Selma, King changed focus and turned his attention to the North and West, with Chicago being chosen as the base for a Northern SCLC campaign. Having achieved everything that he could within legislation, King began to focus on economic issues as he realised that blacks needed help in job, housing and school-related matters. He also became increasingly vocal on the Vietnam War, attacking President Johnson’s policies, making him angry at King’s lack of loyalty. King received a lot of criticism from other civil rights leaders who felt he should be dedicating all of his time and energy to the African-American people and their needs instead of focusing on the Vietnam War. At the age of 39, Martin Luther King was assassinated on the balcony of a Memphis hotel room on the 4th of April 1968, 3 years after the success of â€Å"I have a Dream† and the March on Washington. He was in Memphis to support a strike by black sanitation workers, due to his increasing interest in economic matters. Immediately after his death riots broke out in cities all over the U. S. , with violence and arson becoming widespread. 3000 people were arrested and over 20,000 injured. Despite King’s death thousands of people came to Memphis to support the black sanitation workers’ strike, turning it into a great success. My opinion is that Martin Luther King’s determination and demand for racial equality in the U. S. was unprecedented and his role in prominent civil rights campaigns can certainly be viewed as pivotal in the change brought to U. S. legislation. He was the most inspirational civil rights leader America has ever known and his dignified, peaceful methods should be applauded. His achievements through the Civil Rights Movement and the SCLC, and his powerful â€Å"I have a Dream† speech made an important impact on America, bringing about the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965, earning King a significant place in American history. Today, America has its first African-American President, Barack Obama, something Martin Luther King would surely be incredibly proud of if he were alive. I feel that King’s hard work as a civil rights campaigner put the wheels in motion to make such a feat possible.

This anger generated by these lyrics creates a deep crisis in the black community since women see these performers as mainly interested in money but not in the image of their community. Black women severely criticize the language used in Hip Hop that does not encourage good behavior or even reflect good morals. The lyrics about violence, drugs and sex make these women worried, especially because children tend to view these artists as role models. The author adds: â€Å"Women express their deep mconcern about the emergence of gangsta rap and its lyrics that flagrantly glorified thuggery, violence, drug abuse and vile, demeaning attitudes about and actions towards women, especially African-Americans† (Keels). The language used to portray Black women makes them very frustrated as they become the target of groups that violate their privacy and their integrity through very offensive lyrics. However, without such CSFs, it increases the difficulty in identifying the success and failures in an EIS. It was uncertain to identify the meta-CSFs as only six cases are analyzed. However, based on the analysis, the unresolved case, even though that had well championship from executives and operating sponsors, they miss the fundamental factor. This refers to the resources of the people, financial and appropriate technology. Another factor that influenced the unresolved case is the link to business objectives. Executives have a strong orientation but limited time to search for benefits. System with clear benefits demonstrated, linked to business objectives, and has a higher user acceptance. Temporal consideration is reflected as strong sponsorship of resources before EIS is launched. Little usage is achievable if the system cannot establish clear benefits. The two failure cases provide some evidence of the critical failure factors yearning in failing the EIS, top management prefer informal personal reporting, fear of losing influence by the employees, uncooperative data provider and middle management with EIS project manager and unprepared corporate culture. Both failed organization apparently implemented the Chinese management system. The characteristic of this management is that all strategic and major personnel decision is made by the owners and direct supervision of work and personal reporting rather than formal information system. Critical failure factors are different from the CSFs clear link to business objectives and management of organization resistance. Management system weighted the peoples experiences and beliefs rather than formal written rules for the sake of the organization, may be opposed to business objectives. Strong opposition causes the failure of the IS or vice versa. Mismatch of IS with the organizations managem ent system should be differentiated from normal organization resistance to avoid fear-based culture. However, in these two failure cases, the existence of letting the system fail is higher than the success of the system. Conclusion Understanding system failure and success is important. The on-line analytical processing (OLAP) associated with the EIS trend is a way of looking beyond transactions to forces driving them. It helps organization to have accurate forecast sales to have better planning in inventory, production, advertisement expenses and product pricing. In this study, Rockart and Delongs application of the eight CSFs and the additional of two factors are confirmed. Hence, it is important to have championing, resources and system link to business objectives. Unsuccessful system may result from disagreement with management system. Organizations that translate the needed information with business goals to a good system are likely to success than solving problems with an IS. This means that resources will be received at the time when it is needed and not after. Proper and specific training shall be given by external consultants to internal IS staffs, especially when a new system was created. The Cold War originally referred to a struggle or a conflict that had not escalated into fighting and military conflict, that is, had not escalated into a hot war. Between 1945 and 1991, the United States and the Soviet Union saw each other as potential enemies, threatening each other’s larger global economic, political, and military goals. The Cold War thus was global competition between the United States and the Soviet Union to shape and control the post-World War II global economic and political order. Throughout the Cold War, the United States saw the Soviet Union and communism as the greatest threat and challenge to its global leadership and dominance of an emerging global economy and industrial society. The United States was determined to limit the military and political expansion of Soviet power in order to prevent it from challenging American global economic and political dominance. In 1945 and 1946, there were increasing debates within the United States government over how to deal with the Soviet Union. Should the United States now see the Soviets as an â€Å"evil empire† that threatened to undermine the peace and freedom of an American-led â€Å"free world†? The influential 1946 memo to President Truman said that the Soviets were a global threat to peace. It said that the Soviet Union had a secret plan to conquer the world and spread communism throughout the world. The Soviets refusal to accept American leadership and a global democratic, capitalist community of nations, demonstrated that capitalism and communism could not peacefully co-exist. The Soviet domination of Eastern Europe after World War II and the continuing Soviet military build up was proof that the Soviet Union was threatening global peace and security The Domino Theory: The domino theory was given its specific game and meaning in 1959 by President Dwight D. Elsenhower. He used this theory to refer to the potential spread of communism in Southern-Asia. He specifically said, â€Å"you can have a row of dominoes set up, you knock over the first one, and what will happen to the last one is the certainty that it will go over very quickly. So you could have a beginning of a disintegration that would have  the most profound influences† The influences that he is talking about were the influences of communism. He believed as many others did that if one country in Southern-Asia fell to communism then all surrounding countries would also. This Theory could be applied to the Soviet Union during 1917 to 1980. In this time the Soviet Union gained power by militarily taking land from other countries. The domino theory was a threat to world peace because every country was afraid of falling to communism. The Southern-Asian areas would be the starting domino and when it falls the rest of the dominoes (counties) would eventually fall with it. The domino theory effected Australia the same way as the rest of the world. They were scared that eventually they would fall under communism. NATO: Fifty years ago on April 4, 1949, twelve countries signed the Treaty of Washington and formed the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). Therewere a total of sixteen countries that signed this treaty. Some of those countries were: Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Italy, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Turkey, United Kingdom, Australia and the United States. This organization was born out of the need to strengthen the capacity of a war-devastated Europe in order to defend itself against and deter a Soviet Union, which was rapidly consolidating itself under communism and strengthening its military power. NATO wanted to help the world maintain peace due to the Soviet Union’s threat on the non-Communist countries of Western Europe. NATO weren’t a threat to world peace, NATO were the organization that were against communism and wanted world peace. NATO tried to help non-communist countries against the Soviet Unions threats. Australia was a part of NATO organization, which was against communism. So the effect it had on Australia was good. By Australia signing up for NATO it  just influenced what everyone already felt and this was that they didn’t want to be taken over by the Soviet Union and by communism. Communism: Communism was one of the greatest issues during the cold war. The Soviet Union wanted to spread communism through out the world. Communism is a political and economic system in which the state dominates all aspects of the economy. Under communism, the state controls and runs industries and farms, and government leaders control and run all aspects of society in the name of â€Å"the people.† In communist’s countries, the government and elite leaders rule the country, believing that they know what is best for the people and their society. Whereas, in democratic capitalist countries such as the United States, individuals and corporations are free to control their own economic lives and businesses and the people shape and control their government and society. So the Soviet Union spreading communism throughout the globe was a major threat to the United States. Communism was a threat to world peace because no one wanted the government or the state to have complete control over them. People want to have their own lives and their own rights. So if communism took over it would eventually causes a nuclear/world war. Australia was affected by communism badly. Australia was scared to fall under the power of the Soviet Union and by communism. The fear of communism eventually overtaking Australia was initially the main reason for Australia’s involvement in the Vietnam War. The Cold War affected Australians in main ways: * Australian forces sent to Malayan emergency – June 1950  to accompany the South Vietnamese into combat. In 1965, Australia’s commitment to the war was stepped up to include combat troops. * Australian forces engaged in Confrontation – March 1965 Confrontation was a small-undeclared war fought between 1962-1966 during which Indonesia sought to destabilise the newly independent Malaysia. After two Indonesian raids on the Malayan peninsula in 1964 the Australian government deployed a battalion in Borneo. Indonesia and Malaysia signed a peace treaty in 1966. So although the Cold War was between the United States and the Soviet Union, Australia was still very much involved. Since Australia was allied with the United States, whatever affected the USA affected Australia.

The Importance of obeying orders and being on time for duty. There are many reasons why a soldier, (doesn't matter the rank) should obey orders from anyone above him or her in the chain of command. Sometimes its good to listen to people soldiers below you too because they maybe smarter at the task then you are. One reason is that the military is revolved around higher ranking soldiers leading the lower ranking soldiers, they’re more experienced in the military then I am and been deployed more than i have.If everyone in the military just did their own thing then we wouldn't be a successful army and then our country wouldn't be as strong as it is. Every higher up gives an order for a reason, we may not like the reason but in the end most of the orders and decisions will be smart ones i guarantee. We were taught as children to obey our higher-ups. Starting from our parents, teachers, managers, police officers and etc†¦ So how does this relate to the military?Well, when a per son enlists in the United States Military, active duty or reserve, they take the following oath, â€Å"I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. Right there you are making a promise to the United States Military. Before you or I even put on the uniform, you promise you’ll obey the orders of the President and the orders of the officers appointed over you. Military discipline and effectiveness is built on the foundation of obedience to orders. Brand new privates are taught to obey, immediately and without question, orders from their superiors, right from day one of boot camp. Almost every soldier can tell you that obedience was drilled into their heads at one point in Basic Training.For example, no talking in the chow line, don’t talk with your hands, head and eyes forward, no smiling, stand a parade rest, and of course the famous â€Å"Yes Drill Sergeant / No Drill Sergeant†. Those are just the simple orders you are made to obey in the military. Greater orders mean bigger consequences. Military members who fail to obey the lawful orders of their superiors risk serious consequences. Military discipline and effectiveness is built on obedience to orders.Recruits are taught to obey, immediately and without question, orders from their superiors, right from day-one of boot camp. Which is why we work so well by following orders from the more experienced leaders who have been doing this for years? We have plenty of obedience in Bravo Company and I feel it is one of the best companies in the unit. It has made me want to pursue a career in the military and I know rules and regulations is what am going to make me move up the ranks and make me an all around better soldier.I know I need to work on discipline sometimes and I am doing corrective training right now to make me become a better soldier. So in my essay I have listed many characteristics which in the history and present day made what the army is today. I feel the army values have a big role in rules and regulations because if you follow the values you will not stray off in being disobedient. It's very important to follow directions, or else the world would be in chaos.When some tells you that you must follow directions so that everything can go in an orderly fashion, it's important do because they know what's going to happen if you don't. It's important to follow directions because if you don't something can go wrong, its important follow directions because if you don't you will get in trouble, and it is also important to follow directions because if you don't you'll be writing this essay too. It is important to follow directions beca use if you don't something can go wrong.If you decide to cross the street and someone tells you not to, their telling you for a reason, maybe so that you won't get hit by a car or get shot at in a drive by shooting. It's important follow directions because if you don't you'll get in trouble, if you decide to cross the street after they told you not to, you'll suffer. The importance of reporting on time to the soldiers appointed place of duty is not a task to be taken lightly.Every soldiers has important tasks set out for them no matter what the individual soldier may think about why they are doing that particular job it must be done for a reason that may not be told to that soldier until the task is complete. Reporting to the task on time and in the correct uniform is not to be taken lightly because if that soldier is late to their assigned task then that would mean that a different soldier would have to take the late soldiers place until they rrive which might not seem like a lot t o some people but what if that soldier who was not late had and in most cases would have their own tasks to complete. Now were talking about not just one soldier but a whole organization not functioning the way that it should be or taking more time than it should have to accomplish those few simple tasks. The same thing applies when a soldier is at his appointed place of duty on time but not in the correct uniform then your talking about taking more time to go home get into the correct uniform and hurry back which would be the same thing as showing up late.

20 Must-Dos Before Finishing College College is a wonderful, magical time in a young person’s life. Unfortunately, it doesnt last long and there are some must-dos before finishing college. There is so much to learn and experience. For example, honing the skill of a perfect keg stand takes time, effort and a lot of practice. Since the mind of college students is so full from their education, they might forget there are other things happening outside the classroom. If you are one of those poor, unfortunate souls that have actually attended the vast majority of the semester’s lectures, it is time we gave you a proper college education. We won’t insult your intelligence by mentioning things like attending class drunk or going streaking. By now, you’ve either given those classics a try or you’ve determined you are too much of a pansy to live life on the edge. No, no. Here are 20 must-dos before finishing college. Grab your friends and get to work. Pick someone up in the bar. Use every cheesy pickup line you can think of until you actually score. Bonus points if it happens to be the hot bartender you’ve had your eye on.   This will help you to be more confident when meeting other people. Create total chaos in the middle of a class. Run in and declare your undying love for the lecturing professor or hottie sitting in the front row. To maximize the effect, make sure you don’t know the person. Do a Power Hour. Or, at least the light version of it. You are not a college student if you havent experienced hangover. Read this guide on how to cure hangover fast. Make a move on someone who is totally out of your league. Each person attracts others with certain characteristics. You can be funny, charismatic, open-hearted  - find your strong sides and use them in future. Suggest your RA to do something   inappropriate and fun with you. The point is to develop your skills of maintaining good relationships with someone who is older and wiser than you. Invite your professor to join you at the bar. Getting to know your professor better is not as weird as it seems. You are just supposed to build good relationships with someone who can help you with your future career but dont cross the line in student-teacher relationship. Protest something – anything. Of course, you can always join a group who already has a mission in mind. But it might be better to start your own protest. That way, you can put your foot down about something like having eight-hour workday or selling fast food on campus. Visit a foreign country. Spend as much time there as possible. Submerge yourself in the culture, make new friend, learn other language, try unusual food and have fun! Heres the list of destinations for college students. Write an opinion piece for your school newspaper. Passionately proclaim your ideas about a totally insignificant issue no one cares about. Or, take the total opposite opinion on something that is very mainstream. Throw an unforgettable college dorm party. Put the sweats away for a night and say no to dining service. Sleep outside. With or without a tent. With or without permission from the property owner. Try some foreign cuisine. And no, Chinese doesn’t count. Or pizza. Get something new and exotic. Bonus points if you make it a progressive dinner and hit up all the local restaurants you’ve never tried before. Watch out for the Indian food – it can get spicy! Sign up for a strange class – something totally unrelated to your major that you would never normally consider taking. Get your friends to join you so you can all be confused, grossed out, and/or awed together. Here youll find the list of the most fun classes you can take in college. Tag something on campus. Throw up a little graffiti in a location that is special/memorable to you. Hook up with someone in the stacks at the library. Bonus points if it is a total strange you convinced to put the studying down for a bit. Pull a fire alarm. Either do it at 3 AM or in the middle of final’s week when everyone is studying their brains out. Give them a well-deserved break. Drink in the library. Drinking in places that are not appropriate for that can be fun. However, dont get used to this. Otherwise, it wont be fun. It will be just inappropriate. Throw an â€Å"Anything But Clothes† costume party. A quick tip: dont get dressed in something that can be easily spoiled by drinks. Or, you will have to go howe naked. If its not what you want, choose durable materials for your NOT-clothes. Do something regrettable with your hair or to your body. Pink highlights or a terrible tattoo. Use your imagination. Play on an intramural team. Gather your friends and join a league for something totally ridiculous – like inter-tube water polo or broomball. Many people assume college is for furthering their education. However, this is not the only aim of college education. College is also about experimentation and developing skills which are useful for your adult life.

Sable as a self-description of her color is a very interesting choice of words. Sable is very of the next line. The implication of her last sentence is also this: the angelic train will include both white and black. In the last sentence, she uses the verb remember implying that the reader is already with her and Just needs the reminder to agree with her point. She uses the verb remember in the form of a direct command. While echoing Puritan preachers in using this style, Phillis Wheatley is also taking on the role of one who has the right to command: a teacher, a preacher, even perhaps a master or mistress. What can be said is that the poems of Phillis Wheatley display not only classical quality but restrained emotion as well. Many deal with the Christian sentiments she learned from her masters. Often times, Wheatley uses classical mythology and ancient history as allusions, including many references to the muses as inspiring her poetry in a clear imitation of the great authors that she had studied earlier in her life. She speaks to the white establishment, not to fellow slaves nor, really, for them. This is most likely why individuals feel she was a traitor to her race. The perception of Wheatleys work changed over time. In its prime it was found to be profound that the writings of a black woman could add toward the notions that blacks were ntellectually inferior and incapable of being as equally influential as their white counterparts being disapproved. However, as time progressed, blacks began to treat Wheatleys poems as works of treason against her own race, even going as far as to call her an Uncle Tom or sellout. What must be understood is that the time period in which Wheatley wrote and the time period in which man individuals read her works are drastically different. It is generally individuals of later generations who feel that Wheatley was a traitor to her race for speaking so highly of the whites who enslaved her. Their error is not looking into the reality of the situation. Yes, it is unfortunate that Wheatley was taken from her homeland and shipped thousands of miles on an overcrowded boat to a new nation which she knew nothing of. The exception is that this is probably the worst part of Phillis Wheatleys experience as a slave. She had the opportunity t be well educated, and it is clear that her owners cared well for her. There is no doubt that she was well fed and well dressed. The Wheatleys certainly were not going to have her appear and travel as a representation of them in an unkempt appearance. Phillis certainly knew that there was a cruel and unfair side of enslavemt but she didnt experience it and that was showcased in her poems. It seems almost unfair to blame her for writing her opinions on the experience in slavery that she had. Instead of criticizing Wheatleys poems individuals should Just take them for what they are and learning from them. Each time period is filled with authors who have different points of view and different subjects that are important to them as writers. Rather than viewing Wheatleys works as an act of treason they what it was like for slaved during that time period. It is most likely that Whetley was not the only slave who did not have the typical slave experience and was afforded opportunities rare for the masses. On Being Brought from Africa to America is one of Phillis Wheatleys most discussed pieces. Her points of view are profound and her experience is rare. This is almost more of a history piece than a poem because it allows insight on every aspect of the experience of slavery. Although all may not agree with her views, it cannot be removed that her intellect and abilities reached far beyond her years and gave her works the resilience to transcend generations.

This is because, the stakeholders form part of the Company and any change affect their interest in the Company.
